It is easy to go through life holding beliefs that were formed during our most impressionable years. One of which would be that only strenuous and almost religious exercise is what will bring you to an optimal health. And while growth happens when we step out of our comfort zones, not only billion dollars worth athletes are the ones that covet prestigious position of being in tiptop shape. In fact studies have shown that moderate or mild exercise is more beneficial then giving it all you got and passing out in the gym.
What is it that is your goal? It is different for everyone. Is to be fit or to be healthy? Fitness as a term describes the body’s capacity to do physical work, how long can you run or ride a bike etc. Level of fitness can actually be measured, but it is also depended on numerous factors like flexibility, power, strength, tolerance and endurance. Meaning, if you are not a triathlon competitor that does not mean you are beyond help.
Health as such is a much broader term. It includes general physical shape, mental well being, how resistant are you to colds, flues and different types of diseases. Health and fitness usually go hand in hand, however there are exceptions. If you go to the gym 5 times a week, but have a drug problem, yes you are fit, but you are not healthy.
So which is it, health or fitness or both?
If the goal is physical and mental well being, to reduce stress levels, to boost energy levels, feel better, keep the weight at normal levels and improve your cardiovascular capacities, that does not necessarily mean religious workout in the gym. It may be jogging at an easy pace or riding a bicycle, taking a dog for a long walk, or going for a swim. Physical activity does not have to be a dreaded chore.
If being fit is the aim, regardless if it is to improve performance at amateur or professional sports or because of the demands of the job, it is of imperative to find and stick to a training program. And that would include going to the gym and perhaps finding a personal trainer that will help you organize and monitor the exercise routine. Exercise routine should be between moderate and high in its intensity if being fit is the goal.
