By the mere fact they have survived such a life – threatening disease, cancer patients more then other have all the incentive in the world to make necessary lifestyle changes that will improve their mental and physical well-being. And while the food you eat or the physical activity that you do, do not guarantee for all intents and purposes that the cancer will not come back, that does not mean you should give up, especially when you have come so far. There is no reason whatsoever why you should not enjoy and make the best out of the years ahead of you as a cancer survivor.
Regular physical activity will improve your immune system and lessen the signs of depression, stress and anxiety. It will improve you mood, sleeping patterns and overall strength and endurance. Again, patience and pace are the keys. Start slow and have patience with yourself. Even a little of a physical activity daily will help you feel better and let you gain more strength. And if you do not feel like exercising, that is fine as well. Some days fatigue might get the best of you, but it is important to remember that on the road of recovery rest is equally important as physical activity.
A healthy diet is an important part of the process of recovery. It is essential to keep it varied and balanced at the same time, so that your body gets the nutrients it needs to keep it at an optimum level.
Meals should include carbohydrates from healthy sources, foods like fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Carbohydrates give your body fuel it needs to function, so they are very important part of the diet. There should be 5 or more servings of vegetables and fruits in your diet daily. Fat should be prominent as well, but rather then taking trans fat or saturated fat, meals should include omega-3 fatty acids that can be found in fish. Lean meat, eggs, nuts are all rich in low saturated protein. So it is a combination of fruits, vegetables, proteins, good fat and carbohydrates that will give you the optimum nutrients.
It might be difficult after radiation and chemotherapy to keep your weight at an optimum level, however that is of utmost importance. If you have gained weight, then the best thing is to make an exercise plan that will help you loose weight at a moderate rate. If you have lost weight after your treatments, in a consultation with doctor come up with treatments that will help you keep nausea at bay, as well as ways to make food appealing again.
While all these changes to the lifestyle might seem daunting, it is worth it, you have survived, now make the best of the life that is ahead of you.
