Low Carb Diet Basics

AppleWhile many people want to be slim and healthy, they consider the concept of dieting to be daunting. When you talk to most people about diets, they imagine having to starve, not being able to eat the foods they enjoy. It is for this reason that many people are unsuccessful when they attempt to go on a diet plan. People generally hate diets because they deprive them of the foods they like. However, one thing that you must realize is that diets should not all be placed into the same category. There is one particular diet that will allow you to eat many of the foods you want, while still being able to lose weight. This diet is known as the low carb diet.

When people go on a diet, they do so for either one of two reasons. Their goal is either ot reduce their weight, or to enhance their health. However, it should also be noted that some people go on diets for both the reasons listed. They wanted to improve their health and lose weight at the same time. If you are an adult who is not obese, and you don’t have any immediate family members that are overweight, you will be fine if you choose to stick with the food pyramid. Even if you are healthy, you can maintain your health by choosing a diet that has a lower level of carbohydrates.

If you have diabetes, or you are overweight, the food pyramid will not be very effective. While the low fat diets may work for people who don’t have diabetes, that are not useful for those who do. Not only will low fat diets not work for those who have diabetes, they can actually exacerbate the disease. A low carb diet is the one system that is powerful enough to fight obesity, diabetes(type 2), and high cholesterol. While many doctors have been reluctant to accept this in the past, many of them are now starting to see these results.

It should be noted that there are multiple variations of the low carb diet. One of the most popular and well known of these diets is the Atkins Diet. No matter which low carb diet plan you use, one thing that they all share is that carbohydrates must be reduced. Most of these diets will seek to reduce carboydrates, and replace them with proteins. A low carb diet is very similar to a diet that is rich in protein and high in fat.

Personal Trainers – Pick Well and Reap The Benefits

personal trainerIt might sound like a luxury, however if you do some research and pick a personal trainer you can work with, the advantages and benefits will far outweigh the money you will spend hiring a personal trainer to help your way to getting fit.

And while certificates and references are a good starting point, if a personal trainer is not a good motivator as well, no amount of skills will make up for the fact you dread your exercise time. Yes, their education, training and experience are a very important starting point. There are numerous training schools and education programs and while some might be better then others that does not mean much. Some education and training is a good place to start. References should also be considered when picking a personal trainer. Chance is if the personal trainer is good he or she will have numerous customers that will sing him or her praises.

Thinking outside of the box is another thing to consider. While following any given sets of exercise routines is all fine and good, sometimes it takes a little bit of tweeking to find out what works best for you.

Ask around and find out what are the average prices. Don’t go for too cheap and do not go for too expensive, it is good to find a middle ground. Most expensive does not necessarily mean the best and extra cheap makes you wonder why the price is so low to being with.

And last but not least, as this is the most important aspect to consider, how well do you get along with the personal trainer of your choice. He or she is not your friend, you have hired this person to work with you, however if their personality does not match yours, your relationship might not be very beneficial and most importantly it will not last. And the whole purpose is to stick and improve your exercise routine, remember? Sometimes just a few questions are enough to decide if the personal trainer you think of hiring will work well with you. You are looking for a motivator, not a de-motivator.

Choosing a personal trainer is not as simple as finding a t-shirt you like in a catalogue and ordering. However with even minimal amounts of research it is highly possible you will find a person that will help you along on the way to gaining optimum health and fitness.

How To Overcome Your Love of Carbohydrates

While there is a lot of controvery which surrounds low carb diets, all the evidence shows that they are not going anywhere. When these diets are followed properly, you can be assured that you will lose weight. When you fail at a low carb diet, more than likely, it was a result of your own actions rather than those of the diet. Following a low carb diet can be challenging, especially if you normally maintain a diet which is rich in carbs. You have to dramatically reduce the foods you eat, and this will require you to make large changes to your diet.

However, many food companies are aware of your desire to continue eating the foods you love, and they are working on ways to reduce the number of carbs while making them tasty at the same time. However, you must be wary of many store products which advertise themselves as being “low carb.” Read the label carefully to make sure these claims are backed up. Anything which advertises itself as being low carb, but is rich in sugar, and not low carb at all, because sugars are not allowed in the low carb diet.

Many of these foods are called non-impact carbs, or effective carbs. Some have referred to these products as being “designer” foods, and instead of helping you lose weight, they may actually stop you from successfully following your diet. A carbohydrate is a nutrient that is used by the body to gain a high degree of enegy. There are a number of foods which are rich in these nutrients, and some of them are potatoes, white bread, cereals, and starch vegetables. When you consume carbs, they are transformed into glucose, and your body uses it for energy.

This glucose is very important for your brain. The transformation of carbs into glucose may happen rapidly, or it may happen slowly. The rate at which this transformation takes place is called the Glycemic Index. In most cases, you are considered to be very healthy if the transformation occurs at a slow rate. Non-impact carbs can be described as carbohydrates which don’t effect your blood sugar levels. Because they don’t effect this, they can be consumed by people who are on a low carb diet. Some of the low carb diets that you will want to become familiar with include glycerol, fiber, and sorbitol.

How To Make Low Carb Bread

breadIf you’ve read about the low carb diet, you’re probably aware of the fact that it restricts you from eating foods which are rich in carbohydrates. This would also include bread. However, since bread has been eaten by humans since antiquity, It is very difficult for many people to follow a diet that restricts it. In this article, I will show you a recipe that will allow you to make bread without violating the rules of your diet. This bread is called low carbohydrate bread. This recipe will allow you to make two loaves. The first thing you will need is two cups of water. The water should be warm, but not hot.

You will also need one tablespoon of yeast. It should be an active yeast that is dry. You will next want to get four cups of flour. Now, according to the low carb diet, you are not allowed to use white flour. To get around this, you can substitute white flour for Wheat Glutent Flour.  After you’ve got this, you will next need to get a single egg, and it should be a whole beaten egg. You will then need to get some olive oil, and it should only be two tablespoons. You will next want to get a half teaspoon of salt, and two additional tablespoons of sucralose.

Now that you’ve collected all the ingredients you need, you will now want to make the bread. Take the warm water and combine it with the yeast. Once the yeast has dissolved, you will need to add two cups of the gluten flour, and you will want to beat in the mixture. Before you do this, the yeast should dissolve, and this process should not take more than five minutes. You will now want to let the mixture rise until it becomes foamy. This shouldn’t take more than 1.5 hours. The mixture should be placed in a warm location.

Once the mixture has become foamy, you will next want to take a large mixing bowl, and add the egg, olive oil, splenda, and the salt. You will want to add another two cups of the flour, and it should be beat in as before. You want to avoid using too much flour. You should use enough to where the dough can knead properly. The last thing you will want to do is mix the yeast and flour together. Now you have low carb bread!

How To Live With Someone Who Doesn’t Follow Your Low Carb Diet

eyeFollowing your low carb diet can be extremely difficult, especially if you live with someone who doesn’t follow it. If you’ve read my previous articles, you may remember me advising your to get high carb foods out of your fridge, because it would make it harder for you to go back to eating these foods. However, if you live with someone who doesn’t follow your diet, this could be difficult since they may share food with you, or their food will also be stored in the fridge. First, having a diet different from your spouse doesn’t mean you have to start cooking separate meals.

First, having discipline will allow you to succeed with your diet, even if you live with someone who doesn’t follow it. You must make your spouse understand that this diet is important, and they must avoid pressuring you into eating foods which would compromise the success of your diet. You can continue eating whatever your spouse eats, as long as you make sure you don’t eat anything that would be in violation of your diet. It is important to remember that the low carb diet gives you a lot of freedom, especially when compared to the other diets.

You are allowed to eat as much meat as you want. You are also not limited to the number of vegetables you eat, as long as they are not starchy. You can eat any dessert you want, as long as it is sugar free. The variety of foods you can eat on the low carb diet are truly astounding to the senses. One of the best way to deal with this situation is to communicate with your spouse. Make them understand that this diet is important for you, and it should be important to them as well. While your spouse should be able to eat whatever they want, they should be able to assist you in making sure you follow your diet.

If your spouse decides to order a pizza, you may be tempted to get some. But why don’t you get creative? When they order the pizza, why don’t you just eat the toppings, or ask for a salad or chicken wings? To become successful with this diet, you must be able to adapt. Communication and discipline is key, and the two of you should understand the expectation of the diet, and your spouse should be willing to help you succeed. After all, when you succeed, they will succeed as well.

What NOT To Eat During Pregnancy

During the delicate 9 months of pregnancy it is of imperative to mind your diet, as you are indeed eating for 2 or more at this point. As with all other diets, it is all about balance. The healthiest diet during the pregnancy would be a balanced intake of fruits, vegetables, protein, and grains and of course plenty of fluids. That is all fine and dandy, however somewhat strange cravings might happen. This is a list of foods that have to be avoided in pregnancy diet. And by all means, the purpose of this list is not to scare you, but to make you more watchful of what you eat in the future.

Two things that would have to be avoided at all times are alcohol and caffeine. While one drink probably will not hurt your baby, however no alcohol level is a good option when pregnant.

There is a possibility of miscarriage or stillbirth and large quantities of alcohol may lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, which can result in mental retardation problems, low body weight and heart problems. Both caffeine and alcohol prevent the absorption of iron and folic acid; these are both 2 essential nutrients during your pregnancy.

You should also be watchful of additives during your pregnancy. And while nowadays additives can be found in most foods and products, it would be a safer option to read the labels more carefully. The additive to avoid would be Monosodium glutamate (found in Asian food), it can cause headache and stomach upset. Artificial food colorings should be avoided as well (blue 1, blue 2, green 3, yellow 6 and red 3) and saccharin has not proven safe during pregnancy.

And while junk food in moderation is ok, in the long run the only things you are getting with junk are empty calories without any nutrients that you need during the pregnancy.

Fats should also be avoided. While healthy diet should include around 20% of fat even during pregnancy, you only need around 5% to stay healthy.

Seafood is good for you during the pregnancy. It is full with proteins, iron and omega 3 fatty acids that are all essential and promote the development of the baby’s brain. However, it is good to avoid shellfish like oyster as they might be ridden with bacteria. Also certain fishes might have higher levels of mercury that in turn might damage the development of the fetus. The fishes to avoid are king mackerel, tilefish, swordfish and shark.

Also during the pregnancy it is essential to cook all meat and poultry thoroughly and to avoid raw meat and eggs as they can carry different illnesses.

Weight Loss Drugs

DrugsWith so many so called “miracle drugs” available on the market it is easy to buy into the dream that there is indeed a pill that will make you shed the excess weight like a snake shedding the skin – completely effortlessly. And while there are weight loss drugs that actually work doctors tend to prescribe them to people who have weight related health problems. It is essential to stress that regardless if you are trying to loose the weight for perfectly cosmetic reasons or you have weight related health problems, no pill, miracle or a common one, will make you reap the benefits like the good old physical activity and healthy diet. Yes it does take time, perseverance and patience, however it is because of the change in habits and habitual thinking and introducing new patterns into your behavior that the combination of physical activity and healthy diet work in the long haul.

When should weight loss drugs be considered? First and foremost it is not advisable to take the weight loss drugs of your own accord and without a doctor’s consultation. In case change in the diet and exercise routine has not helped with the weight loss then weight loss drugs might have be taken. Also in case your BMI (Body Mass Index) is over 27 and there are medical conditions due to obesity to consider (such as diabetes, sleep apnea or high blood pressure) or in case the BMI is higher then 30.

In United States the Food and Drug Agency has so far approved 2 weight loss drugs, which work in different ways and have different side effects.

Xenical (also known as Orlistat) prevents the absorption of fat in the intestines (side effects include frequent bowel movements, bloating, diarrhea and abdominal pain).

Meridia (also known as Sibutramine) works on brain chemicals and you get a feeling you have eaten enough more quickly (side effects include high blood pressure, dry mouth, constipation, headaches and insomnia).

These 2 drugs are prescribed as an aid to long-term weight loss. There are other drugs that work in the short term, which are mostly appetite suppressants, however they have not be subjected to tests in long term studies, so their effects are temporary.

Considering weight loss drugs is a serious business, as it might mean you will have to take them for life, as much of the weight returns once you stop taking them. And most of these drugs are not tested in the long-term studies, so the long-term side effects are generally unknown. Do all you can and make an effort to eat healthier food, exercise regularly and make all the necessary changes in your lifestyle. In case that does not work, consider the help of weight loss drugs in consultation with your doctor.

Macrobiotic Lifestyle and Diet

CookbookMacrobiotic diet is one of those things you have probably heard of, but never knew what it exactly means. It is said that macrobiotic diet can prevent and treat different types of cancer, though there no conclusive studies that show that truly is the case.

The founder of macrobiotic diet is George Ohsawa and he drew from Japanese and oriental folk medicine to create a new version of health philosophy. It revolves around the concept of yin and yang; these are the opposite yet complimentary forces that govern the Universe. People who choose macrobiotic lifestyle tend to observe these forces in the world around them and use to them to achieve more balance in their everyday lives. The same principle is adapted to the macrobiotic diet as well.

Foods are observed through their yin and yang properties, so the whole purpose of macrobiotic diet is to achieve the balance between yin and yang foods as well. Some of the types of yin foods would be fruit juice, milk, sugar and cream, while yang foods include fish, poultry, eggs, meat and hard cheeses. Many people are drawn to macrobiotic lifestyle and diet to treat cancer, the belief behind it is that the cancer and other degenerative diseases are a result of imbalance of yin and yang and this imbalance can be cured by proper choice of food.

The macrobiotic diet follows some general guidelines which include eating soups daily, small amounts of seaweed and fruits, 25 – 50% of vegetables, 10 – 20% of beans and bean products and 25 – 50% of whole cereals. The rest of the diet consists out of seafood and fish, nuts, seeds, seasonings, sweeteners and beverages. The diet is also adjusted according to unique personal considerations but also taking into account gender, climate, season, activity, health condition etc. Macrobiotic followers prefer less processed and organically grown food and the food is prepared by the methods of steaming, blanching, boiling and sometimes eaten raw.

The food is also chosen and cooked according to the season, in spring the food that is being used is lighter in quality and prepared with light cooking style such as steaming or cooking for shorter periods of time. The same is applied during the summer time. In autumn and winter the accent is on food with more stronger and concentrated quality, such as heavier grains and root vegetables.

For people who decide to adopt macrobiotic lifestyle it is suggested to ease into it gradually and with a consultation with an macrobiotic expert, who will adapt the diet according to unique needs of the individual.

Ayurveda – Not So Alternative Treatment

AyurvedaAyurvedic medicine practice has been used for thousands of years in India, however over the recent years it has reached the Western countries. And even though the most commonly practiced Ayurvedic treatments in the West are different types of massages and dietary and herbal advice, there is much more to Ayurveda then it meets the eye.

The mere meaning Ayurveda would be translated loosely to mean “The Science of long life” and it is a combination of healthy living and treatments that bring the harmony between mental, physical, social and spiritual aspects of an individual. Ayurveda is also one of the rare traditional systems of medicine that has developed surgical treatments for patients.

There are 8 branches of Ayurveda that include surgery, internal medicine, spiritual healing, health and longevity, toxicology, ear/throat/nose, pediatrics and purification of genetic organs.

The central point of Ayurveda medicine practice is the Tridosha system. The doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) are 3 fundamental bodily substances that when in harmony creates a balance within the body.

Kapha is the water principle and it relates to muscous, the carrier of nutrients into the arterial system.

Pitta is the fire principle and it uses bile to direct digestion and metabolism into the venous system, while Vata is the air principle that is necessary to mobilize the nervous system. Ayurvedic practitioners believe that every humans has one dosha which is predominant in the body, however all the doshas have some basic elements.

Medication and treatments that Ayurvedic practitioners use in their daily practice operate on the premise that various materials of animal, mineral and vegetable origin have medical and therapeutic value. Ayurvedic treatments also use different mixtures of herbs, which are either used alone or in combination with different minerals, metals or ingredients of animal origin. The properties of these herbs and different combinations of mixtures have been documented over the years and all the metals, minerals and ingredients of animal origin are purified before used as treatments.

Ayurvedic treatments and practice has never disappeared from the Indian subcontinent and the natives have always considered it as the science of life. However the ayurvedic practice was on the decline for number of years due to Western style hospitals that were being built in the area. In the 1970s the situation changed when Ayurveda gain in popularity and was embraced in the West as a type of alternative treatment.

By combining the 3 basic principles with in the 8 branches of Ayurveda, the emphasis is on the holistic approach to medicine, the combination of body, mind and spirit. To prevent different types of conditions Ayurveda advocates exercise, yoga, hygiene and herbal remedies, while in treatment of the accent is on diet, physiotherapy and different types of herbs mixtures.

Osteoporosis – Another Reason To Exercise

OsteoporosisOsteoporosis is a medical condition where due to the loss of mineral density there is an increase of the fragility of the bones and as such is a major cause of disability in older women. And while the mere thought of exercise can be scary because you are afraid of possible injuries, in the long run exercise can help you improve your balance, muscle strength and lessen the possibility of injuries. It can also lead to increased bone density in the long run.

If you suffer from osteoporosis, it is best to consult a doctor before you begin with any type of physical activity. A bone density test may be necessary as well as an overall test to assess your current fitness condition. Doctor will help you make the choice most suitable for your condition. It is best to choose the activities that you enjoy, as you are more likely to stick with that routine over a longer period of time.

In general there are 3 types of exercises and activities that are recommended for osteoporosis sufferers.

One of the activities suggested is the flexibility training as it can lead to increased mobility of your joints, which in turn will prevent possible muscle injuries. It is recommended to do the stretches after you have finished with your workout as the muscles are warmed up so there is less risk of injury. Stretching should be done with slow, controlled and gentle movements.

Another activity that is suggested is the weight bearing aerobics such as walking, gardening and dancing. The premise of weight bearing aerobic activities is that while you are being active your bones are supporting your weight while you stand on your feet. Such activities would also include swimming, which can be very beneficial in the rehabilitation process after a suffered fracture.

Strength and resistance training- where you use resistance to develop more muscle, are a good choice for osteoporosis sufferers. It is very effective for bone stimulation and it slows down the mineral loss. Strength training would include activities such as using weight machines, free weights and resistance bands.

It is recommended to stay clear from high intensity workouts such as running, jogging, jumping as they could lead to injuries. In general any type of jerky and uncontrolled movements should be avoided. Also it is recommended to avoid activities where you would bend and twist your waist, as this compresses the bones in your spine. Sports that should be avoided are tennis, bowling, golf and some types of yoga.

Even if you suffer from osteoporosis and you have never exercised in your life, it does not mean you can not have a better quality of life with exercise. The good thing about exercise is that regardless of your overall health it is never too late to start.
