When Should You Consider Dietary Supplements?

Nowadays dietary supplements can be found in most drugstores, pharmacies, even supermarkets. Do you need them? This answer depends on numerous factors such as your eating habits, your general health, age, gender, some of which are within your control and some of which are not.

However, if you are practicing one of the following you might have to consider dietary supplements.

In case you are a vegetarian, the chance is that you are not getting enough zinc, calcium, iron, vitamin B and D. While you can get all of these with non-meat sources, such as wholegrain products, fortified soy products and the like, in case you do not consume these, you might have to consider dietary supplements.

If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, the essential nutrients that you need are calcium, iron and folic acid. Consult a doctor for a good prenatal supplement that will give your baby all the nutrients it needs for growth and development.

In case you are postmenopausal woman, your estrogen levels are lower and due to lower estrogen, bone density is lower. You need calcium and vitamin D, both of which will keep your bones strong. In case you are still not menopausal but suffer from heavy bleeding during your menstruation cycles you might be deficient with iron. Prolonged iron deficiency might lead to anemia.

If you do not eat well (meaning less then 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day) or not often enough (like only once or twice a day) or if you are on a low calorie diet, your body is not getting enough nutrients it needs to function properly.

If you are a smoker, you might have to consider vitamin C, magnesium, calcium and folate, as tobacco decreases the absorption of most vitamins and minerals. Same can be applied for alcohol as well.

Dietary supplements are not meant to be a substitute for food - that means there is no way to dodge those 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. However, it would be best if you would access your needs, especially if you belong to one of the groups described above and decide what are the possible vitamins and minerals you might be lacking. When buying dietary supplements make sure to check the labels and what are the active ingredients. It would be best to go for a multivitamin-mineral supplement, as these supplements have all the vitamins and minerals your body needs, rather then dietary supplement that has a high dose of one vitamin and lower dose of another.

Any foods which can be digested quickly are candidates for bad carbs. Good carbs are just the opposite. These are carbs which are slowly digested by the body. Because you can digest them slowly, the food makes you full, and it takes longer for you to become hungry again.

Some of the foods which are rich in good carbs include green beans, broccoli, and spinach. As you can see, these are all green vegetables. This is why it is so important for you to eat them. Women’s Fitness

womenLets face, as if it was not plainly obvious, men and women are different. And as such both women and men have different fitness and workout needs. While men make it a prerogative to work on their muscle strength, most women will do little or no strength training in favor of treadmill or trim bike. The purpose of women’s exercise routine should be to lower the excess body fat, improve the muscle tone, it is not to loose your curves altogether. It does not mean to give up on the Stairmaster or treadmill altogether, it means your exercise routine should incorporate some free weights as well.

With a workout that uses free weights the main difference between men and women is in the chest area. While men should concentrate on the chest muscle, for women the accent is on the upper back, which should give the shoulder blades more strength to pull together and support the chest. It will also give you a better posture.

Stomach muscles are the weakest areas for most women, regardless have you given birth or not. Why, apart from purely vain reason, is the stomach area so important? Because if this particular area is weak, the back will take the strain, which in the long run can lead to chronic back problems. And there is no need for a special machine to help you get those abs you have always wanted, simple sit ups will do the trick. It will take a while, however with determination it can be done.

If gym is not your thing, then Pilates or yoga is a good physical activity to consider as it might not burn the calories, but it will strengthen, tone and elongate the muscle you never knew you had. It is estimated that women who do not exercise regularly over a period of 10 years loose approximately 5 pounds of muscles. This leads to lower metabolic rate, metabolism slows down and it is even more difficult to loose weight that you have gained.

So find that gym you will enjoy going to or find an exercise class that addresses your fitness needs. It might be a good idea to join a women’s only gym club, as it will have machines and classes that are aimed especially at your needs. Do some shopping around and find what suits you best the choices are endless.

Meat, Poultry and Seafood – The Essential Source Of Protein

fishMeat and poultry make up a huge portion of people’s daily diets. And while they are extremely rich with protein, vitamin B, zinc and iron, they are also rich with fat and cholesterol, so they should be enjoyed in moderation in case you have high cholesterol levels. Fish is rich with protein, however fish is low in cholesterol and fat which makes it an ideal substitute for poultry and meat.

Proteins are essential fuel your body needs. They contain so-called amino acids, which form chains in our bodies. And while the body itself produces some amino acids, the so-called essential amino acids can only be taken as a part of diet.

There are high biological and low biological value foods. It means that meat, poultry and chicken contain the essential amino acids that have to be taken with your diet and are a good source of protein. The low biological value foods have low levels of essential amino acids or none at all, the example being nuts, pulses or seeds.

It is estimated that about 10 – 15 % of diet should consist out of protein and if we have 1 or 2 meals a day that contain protein that should be enough. For vegetarians who do not eat meat at all it is best to stick to a well balanced diet as that should give them the ideal amount of protein. It is good to remember the body cannot stock the protein and that is why protein should be included in the diet on daily basis.

When buying and preparing meat, poultry and fish general guidelines should be followed. With meat and poultry it is essential to check the expiration date. Also poultry should be cold to touch and look supple and moist, while with meat is good to check the moistness and color. When buying both meat and poultry go for lean cuts as they will have less fat calories.

When it comes to fish, the best would be to go for fresh fish at the local market. However with both fresh and frozen fish it is essential to find a reliable source, whether it is a supermarket or specialized fish market. If the fish comes in package check the expiration date, if it is fresh look at its eyes and scales, if the eyes are white and bright and scales well attached it means the fish is fresh.

How Low Carb Diets Can Allow You to become Healthier

happyWhen you first tell your friends and family that you’re going on a low carb diet, they will often be concerned with your health. The reason for this is because many people don’t understand the low carb diet. As with any unknown thing, when people don’t understand something, they have a tendency to fear it. When you consume carbohydrates, your body will systematically release insulin into your blood. The insulin will be responsible for giving instructions to your cells. It will instruct your cells to absorb the sugar from the blood, and it will also tell your cells not to release any fat for energy, since the carbohdyrates are already being used for this.

Since the fat cells are not instructed to burn the fat, they don’t. What this means is that the fat stays in your body. Insulin plays an important role in removing sugar from your blood, because if the sugar stays in your blood, it can do a great deal of harm to your body. The reason why diabetes is such as dangerous disease is because of the damage the sugar does to your body when you don’t have enough insulin to control it. Whenever you eat something that is rich in sugar, such as cakes, cookies, or donuts, your body will release a large amount of insulin to get the sugar out of your blood.

Your body will proceed to remove all the sugar from your blood. However, there is a problem with this. When your body takes all the sugar out of your blood, you will want more sugar. It is this phenomenon that is known as the “sweet tooth.” While insulin is important for removing sugar from your blood, it is also a double edged sword because it forces the body to store fat rather than burning it. A low carb diet will help you avoid this problem, because instead of burning carbohydrates, you will be able to burn fat, and as the fat is burned, you will begin to lose weight.

When you eat foods large in fat, rather than sugar and carbohydrates, your body will begin to burn fat rather than the carbohydrates. To a lot of people, the low carb diet doesn’t make much sense, because they have been led to believe that fat is bad, and having a diet rich in fat will make you fat. However, this is because the body stores the fat, when the body uses the fat for energy, it will not store, since you need it to function.
