Selecting Your Low Carb Recipes

Whether you are new to low carb dieting or have made it a part of your life for years you are probably always searching for new low carb recipes to try out. There is a huge industry aimed at the low carb fans but to play it on the safe said you can make your own meals. Not only is it easy and fun but it is a much more cost effective way to eat. If you haven’t noticed already most diet foods cost a little it more that their full fat and calorie twin.

One of my personal favorite low carb recipes is flourless crepes which can be filled with anything of your choice, as long as it is low carb friendly of course. To make this simple crepe you will need one large egg, one teaspoon of oil, one tablespoon cream, 1/4 teaspoon of sugar substitute, and 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla. Pour all ingredients into a frying pan and stir together. Cook on medium heat until it looks cooked, then carefully flip over and cook the other side for a few seconds. Now add your favorite filling such as cheese and melt.

There are plenty of low carb ingredients for low carb recipes including low carb bread crumbs, pasta, and sauces. If you are getting bored of the low carb recipes you have you can check out one of the many books, web sites, and other resources which have many daily or weekly menus to choose from.

If you aren’t one to cook for your self then you can always visit a local restaurant which serves low carb choices on their menus. You can also check out your local grocer for low carb meals that are ready to be heated up and is usually in nice one serving sizes.

Tips for Low Carb Restaurant Dining

dining tableFor many Americans eating out and low carb dieting have become a common mix. Simply because you are dieting doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be able to enjoy a lunch or dinner out. There are a few tips that you can stick to while eating out such as filling up on fruits and vegetables and eating lean meat and fish in small portions.

You a get a menu from the restaurant if you aren’t already familiar with the dishes they offer, and you will be able to select your meal and know what you are having ahead of time. This is a great way to avoid ordering something fattening and unhealthy simply because your hunger pangs were overwhelming or because you smell something amazing!

Another useful trick is to order first because then you won’t be tempted to change your mind when someone orders something that sounds delicious. By ordering first you may even see that others will follow in your footsteps and go with healthier options.

Don’t be afraid to ask for smaller portions. You can see if you are able to get the kids or seniors sized portion which will give you fewer calories and temptation, as well as a cheaper price.

When you are ordering you can always ask the waiter how the dish of your choice is prepared and want to avoid anything cooked in butter or oils. Also ask if there are healthier less fat options available.

A trick that never fails is to drink a large glass of water while waiting for the meal. This will not only help your food get digested quicker and easier, but it will also make you feel full faster and eat less.

If you find that everything on the menu is high in unhealthy fats, carbs, and calories then you can ask to see if the chef can prepare you a plate of fresh fruit and vegetables. It is common for restaurants to have a vegetarian menu separate from the main menu, so ask if you don’t see what you are looking for.

New Special K Protein Water

special kHave some of you notice when going grocery shopping that there is a new line of Kellogg’s protein enriched foods ? Its incredible how the beverage industry has increased in the past 3 years.

Now there is a new Kellogg’s K20 water that is special because it contains 5 grams of protein. The bottle itself contains 16oz of water. Kellogg’s K20 also contains about 8 grams of sugar.

Sounds nice, but how much does it cost?

They have set the price to $1.50, which is about the same as there competitors.

A BusinessWeek column called “a case of brand extension greed” - and I think they are correct. According to the Promo Magazine: “The line will be positioned as nutritious, targeting consumers interested in weight loss.”

Kellogg says that thanks to this water now its easier to lose 6 pounds in 2 weeks. I really don’t know why they say this, water doesn’t actually make you lose weight, it only helps you.

I wonder if this we actually sell well.

Low Carb Chili Recipe

chiliHere is a savory low carb chili recipe that I have been eating for years. I have always used pinto beans but kidney beans and black beans have a fewer carb-count than pinto beans. The recipe is as follows:

One tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
One-half cup diced yellow onion
One sixteen ounce can of kidney or black beans (drained and rinsed)
One and a half pounds ground sirloin (lean beef)
One-half green pepper (chopped)
46 fluid ounce bottle of tomato juice (or V8 juice)
Three teaspoons chili powder
One teaspoon ground cumin
Dashes of Tabasco Sauce or chopped jalapeno (optional)
One medium-sized diced tomato (optional)
You want to begin by browning the ground sirloin in a skillet. Next you need to lightly sauté the onions and green pepper in the olive oil and then combine the ground sirloin with the onions/peppers combination. Stir in the chili powder and cumin, as well as the beans and tomato juice. If you like you chili to be a bit spicier then you can add Tabasco sauce and jalapeno peppers as you wish.

Once you have all the ingredients mixed together well let it simmer in a covered pot for at least one full hour. If you want to add some fresh flavor to your chili then add some cubed tomato and cilantro sprigs.

To keep this a low carb chili you must contain your self and stay away from corn chips and saltines as a topping or side. You can defiantly offer them to your guests and children who may not be on a low carb diet and can enjoy all the carbs they want to.

Just because you are on a low carb diet it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy your favorite dishes as you would like to.

Low Carb Fruits For Your Diet

strawberryFor whatever reasons the majority of us don’t have the time or energy to spend twenty hours a week at the gym in order to combat insulin resistance and work off the after effects of a high carb meal plan. It is smart to stick with a diet that is rich in high fiber, non starchy vegetables and low sugar fresh fruits.

This is not only incredibly healthy but it forces your body to minimize its demand for insulin and lower the cells’ resistance to its effects. Fruits are generally low in carbs but may contain sugar which causes your body to react with insulin. The main thing you are going for with low carb dieting is to make your body require the smallest amount of insulin as possible.

You can basically say goodbye to fruit juices if you are on a low carb diet because they are way too high in sugar and aren’t filling for the amount of calories. I’m sure you would rather eat a bowl of fresh mixed fruit than drink a small eight ounce cup of juice. You should stick with about a half cup serving of each type of fruits, unless otherwise listed.

The best fruits to eat when on a low carb diet include apples, apricots, blackberries, blueberries, boysenberries, cantaloupe, cherry, gooseberry, grape, honey dew, kiwi, lemon, mulberry, orange, peach, persimmon, pineapple, plum, raspberry, strawberry, tangerine, and watermelon.

Some low carb diets focus more on glycemic index or glycemic load such as the South Beach diet and The Zone, while others look at the total carbs such as the Atkins diet and the Protein Power. The Atkins and South Beach ban fruits all together because of their high sugar content, but I prefer to go with a more balanced approach such as The Zone recommends.

Low Carb Wines

wineThere are an estimated sixty million Americans on some type of low or now carb diet such as the South Beach diet and the Atkins diet. Many people ask what the low carb rating of wine is, so a US regulatory decision in 2004 permitted wine producers to market dry table wines as being low carb as long as they had their nutritional information on the label.

This regulation allowed the product to be labeled low carb as long as the wine contained fewer than seven grams of carbs in a five ounce serving. Almost every single dry table wine can easily meet this requirement. Low carb diets must avoid sweeter wines such as White Zinfandels and other “blush” wines because they fail to meet these requirements by far.

There have even been recent health claims that wine has powerful antioxidants in them which can help block against free radicals, and prevent heart disease, and cancer. In red whines you are able to benefit from polyphenol, catechin, and cholesterol lowering resveratrol.

Low carb dieters are worried about their wine’s residual sugar content. A great indication as to the number of carbs in a wine can be its dryness or sweetness, generally the sweeter tasting, the more carbs.

Some claim that they have a wine that doesn’t have any carbs but that is obviously impossible considering the mechanics of fermentation. The process of turning sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide during fermentation is limited by the yeast and would no longer be considered wine but brandy. It is safe to say that all wines have some level of residual sugar left behind after the fermentation process was complete and residual sugar is equal to carbs.

Even if you are on a strict low carb diet you are still able to enjoy many delicious wines with your meals as long as you have them in moderation.

Brown Seaweed Can Reduce Abdominal Fat

Now people have yet another tool to get rid of that bad looking waistline. A new Japanese study showed that brown seaweed can help reduce abdominal fat.

This study was not done with humans, it was done with small mice. The mice showed a decrease of 10% body weight through their abdomen with seaweed. Scientist concluded it was the pigment fucoxanthin, which also stimulated a protein in their white adipose tissue to oxidize.

Brown seaweed is not popular here in the US, but over at Japan - it’s consumed often. I did some research in Wikipedia and it shows that seaweed makes almost 10% of the Japanese diet. Also, it seems like Japan doesn’t have the big problem of overweight people as we do here in the United States.

OK, now back with the study - the finding shows very good results. We can eventually see some type of seaweed weight loss pill in a couple of years.

The only problem I see is that this study was not done with humans, so they still have a long way to go, but this still looks very promising.

But Doesn’t Low Carb Ice Cream Taste Bad?
